Knesset deplores Arafat parley
NZPA Jerusalem The Israeli Parliament, in a rare display of unity, has overwhelmingly condemned the Austrian Chancellor (Dr! Bruno Kreisky), the first! Western leader to accord a red-carpet welcome to Yasser Arafat, head of the Palestine Liberation Organisation. In speeches before the vote on a joint resolution, the Prime Minister (Mr Menachem Begin) and the Opposition leader, Shimon Peres, said the Dr Kreisky’s weekend meeting with Mr Arafat in Vienna would encourage further Arab terrorism ! against Israel.
The resolution, approved 82-5 with three abstentions, said the Knesset (Parliament) condemned the invitation and the official reception accorded by the Austrian Chancellor to the jleader of the P.L.O. The resolution charged that the P.L.O.’s aim was the destruction of Israel by means of the deliberate, planned attacks of murder against the Jewish civilian population. The motion made no mention of the former West German Chancellor, Willy Brandt, who, in his role as chairman of the Socialist International, also met Mr Arafat.
