TV interviewing
Sir, —- I agree with W. J. McKay (July 9) in criticism of the TV reporter’s handling of the interview with a strike leader. What appeared like an attempt to rouse resentment when things are settling down is not good interviewing. An earlier case (at Kawerau, I think) was the young woman who asked “Don’t you think you’ll lose face by agreeing to this?” (or words to that effect). A young man later used a similar approach. Lack of training may be the explanation. It is not an excuse. Are such items not checked before being screened in public? Considering all the free publicity TV gives politicians, the F.0.L., trade unions, strikers, protest groups, etc., have the heads of TV ever considered charging a small fee for each appearance? Both stations could be in the black in no time and we might have more varied programmes. — Yours, etc., SADIE G. BALKIND. July 9, 1979.
