Shop expansion at Burnham rejected
An appeal to allow for the ! expansion of the shop and ; petrol station opposite Burnham Military Camp on the ; Main South Road has been refused by the No. 3 divi- : sion of the Planning Tribunal. The original application by the owner of the property (Foodstuffs Christchurch Properties, Ltd) was approved by the Ellesmere County. Council and would have provided for a new shop (replacing the existing building which has been on the site about 100 years), a refreshment centre, a sevenday dairy, a motor accessories shop, the existing petrol pumps, and a residence. The Ministry of Works and the Canterbury Regional
Planning Authority appealed against the decision. The tribunal ruled that the proposal would involve “a change in character” on the site and said that the expanded shopping facilities at Burnham Camp might be adversely affected. The tribunal decided that the proposal would detract from the existing amenities of the area and would not be “good planning.” The existing store will be allowed to remain. “But we do not consider it appropriate to allow it to be relocated on the present site in a substantially larger and more permanent form.” the chairman of the tribunal (Mr P. R. Skelton, S.M.) said in a written decision.
