Shortage of postmen delays U.K. mail

A shortage of postmen is one reason for the decline of Britain’s once impeccable and reliable postal service. The shortage is most acute in London, the south-east and eastern regions, and has been growing for some months. The Post Office says it needs 2000 postmen and another 1500 higher-grade postal workers nationally,
simply to return to an adequate .service. The delays are worst in London, the Home Counties, the Midlands, and the north-east. In addition to the 20M undelivered letters in London, there are 25,000 for Birmingham and 17,000 parcels. It can take up to a week for a letter to travel across London. The situation was aggravated by a one-day industrial stoppage by management staff on June 14.
