Abdication speech
“The Abdication’’ — the last episode in the television series “Edward and Mrs Simpson’’ — screens on Television One tonight. The King, bombarded on all sides with advice and criticism, kept postponing the meeting between himself and the Duke of York — who has not yet been consulted about his willingness to take up the
duties Edward planned to give up. The reason for this was that two people had ternporarily weakened the king’s resolution to end the crisis: Churchill and make an act of renunciation and had fled Mrs Simpson. Although Mrs Simpson had at first refused to France, she has a change of heart and reverses her decision. Despite this Ed-
ward makes up his mind to abdicate. On December 10 the instrument of abdication was signed and witnessed by the King’s three brothers. He made his broadcast to the nation from Windsor Castle (picture) said his good-byes to the family, then set sail for F H.M.S. Fury - . ln t° exile with the woman he loved.
