Mysterious oil blaze in Iran

NZPA-Reuter Teheran A big oilfield blaze erupted in Iran’s southern Khuzestan province yesterday after a mysterious explosion, according to the official P.A.R.S. news agency. Nine oil and gas pipelines were ablaze and flames had spread out across a wide area, it said. A spokesman for the National Iranian Oil Company said supplies to the Abadan refinery, the world’s largest, had been cut off. The explosion had occurred on Saturday in the port city of Mahshahr. The cause was not known. It ignited an oil and a gas pipeline and the heat from that blaze yesterday set off an explosion in seven more pipelines.

Emergency teams turned off the gas flow. The spokesman said there was no indication of sabotage so far and that the blaze was being brought under control. The pipeline was being patrolled by armed security men, as were all oil installations.

The Abadan refinery' was still working in spite of the cut-off.

The original explosion had occurred 18km from the Abadan refinery', which was working on its reserves.

The refinery has a production capacity of 600,000 barrels a day. The spokesman said that up to 440,000 barrels a day were now being refined. Most of Iran’s oil exports are shipped from Kharg Island, south of Mahshahr.
