Big rises at bull sale
A much improved national Hereford sale at Palmerston North saw 27 bulls sold for an average of $4337, which was up by $l6OO on last year. A Marlborough bull topped the sale at $lO,OOO, and altogether eight sales were made at more than $5OOO.
The newly elected president of the Hereford Association, Mr J. Murray, of Clarence Bridge, who judged the show class held in conjunction with the sale, expressed pleasure that so many high-quality bulls had been paraded and said he had had difficulty in separating the top six bulls in the final lineup.
The bull from J. L. Allen, of Tetley Brook, Seddon, which Mr Murray placed second, topped the sale at $lO,OOO. It went to the Awataha Stud, of Napier. Three sales were made at $BOOO, one of these bulls being from Mrs G. M. Burrows, of Culverden. It went to Wairarapa. Another South Island bull from H. E. Williams, of Blenheim, realised $5OOO. R. J. Burrow's, of Culverden, made a sale at $3500.
The winner of first prize, and champion of the show, was a bull from I. A. Barnett, of Dannevirke, which realised $6OOO.
At the national Charolais show and sale at Hamilton the highest price paid was $7250 for a bull
from Tynedale Cattle Breeding, Ltd, of Te Awamutu. The bull was judged champion of the show before being sold to L.S.B. Abel, of Leneda Charolais Lodge, Cambridge.
For 75 lots the sale grossed $137,200 with an average of $lB3O a head. Led purebred heifers sold to $4250, and averaged $2835, Unled purebred heifers sold to $4700, and averaged $2082. Purebred in-calf cow's made to $4500, and averaged $2BBO. Seven-eighth heifers sold to $l2OO, average $950.
Led bulls sold to $7250, and averaged $lB4B. Unled bulls made to $l9OO, the average being $1250. Australian buyers were active, almost half of the selection going to them.
In all sections the sale was better than last year, in spite of the fact that there were almost twice as many bulls as last vear.
