U.K. bid to set up deer farm

NZPA London The Royal Agricultural Society in England is hoping to show its farmers the way to emulate New Zealand’s deer-farming successes. The society has set up an experimental deer unit at the National Agricultural Centre at Kenilworth, Warwickshire, using 20 red deer from Whipsnade Zoo. Many of them are hinds in calf. Deer farming was first set up in Britain by the North of Scotland Agricultural College and is seen by some as an ideal type of farming for that area.

The New Zealand experience in farming deer for venison and for antler velvet has been often cited in Britain, w'here deer have been kept for many years in an “ornamental” capacity on private parkland at stately homes.
