Waldheim calls meeting
NZPA-Reuter New York The United Nations Secre-tary-General (D. Kurt Waldheim) has announced a special meeting to be held in Geneva on July 20 and 21 to deal with the Indo-China refugee problem. The announcement, made in person by Dr Waldheim in Geneva and alsc released by United Nations headquar- ; ters in New York, said the meeting would be at Ministerial level.
Inivitations were being sent to countries in a position to contribute to the solution of the problem, including countries of first asylum and all 31 members of the executive committee of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. The bulk of the refugees, from Vietnam, Kampuchea, and Laos, have been fleeing to Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and other countries around the rim of the South China Sea. Meanwhile the British Foreign Secretary (Lord Carrington), visiting Hong Kong, has called for pressure to be put on Vietnam to stop what he described as the “export of human misery.” And the American Health, Education, and Welfare Secretary (Mr Joseph Califano) left China at the week-end, calling the export of Vietnamese refugees “an outrage to human decency” and calling on China to accept even more of the homeless.
