Southall riot ‘review’
NZPA London The British Government will review the functions of the controversial police Special Patrol Group and the Public Order Act in the wake of the Southall riot in which the New Zealander, Blair Peach, was killed. The twin pledges for “review” were made to the House of Commons by the Home Secretary (Mr William Whitelaw) after examination of a report on the Southall riot by the Metropolitan Police Commissioner (Sir David McNee).
The Special Patrol Group has been blamed by witnesses for clubbing Mr Peach to the ground at the demonstration, and there have been repated calls for it to be disbanded.
