Gas leak delays rescue
PA Wellington Leaking butane gas delayed attempts to rescue the| driver of a crashed tanker in' the central North Island yesterday. Firemen used cutting] equipment to free the driver, who was trapped for more' than two hours. The crash blocked the mainl road between New Plymouth and Te Kuiti for more than! seven hours. The driver, whose name! was not available, was in Te| Kuiti Hospital last evening. The police said that his injuries were not serious. The accident occurred at Mahoenui, 50km south-west of Te Kuiti. on -a winding section of the road. It was necessary to'close the road to free the injured driver and allow butane gas to be transferred to another truck. The crashed (ruck was carrying four tanks of bu-, tane gas from New Plymouth to Auckland. It went off the I road and was left suspended! over a bank. Rescue workers secured it, until a mobile crane arrived! from New Plymouth to lift it back on to the road.
