Objections to weed subsidy
Noxious-weed control in the Paparua county could be stopped for several years because of a change in Government policy. The Government subsidy on agricultural chemicals was recently lowered from 75 per cent to 50 per cent. The Paparua noxious plants officer (Mr J. B. Pearson) commented at a meeting of the county’s rural district council that the change would double the chemical costs for property owners. Most local authorities fel( that the Government had been ill-advised on the policy change, said Cr W. J. Baker. A deputation would see the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Pdaclntyre) in an attempt to have the policy changed, he said. The change meant, that some agreements the council had made with propertyowners could not be honoured, said Cr A. Y. Shuker. The council agreed to send a letter to the Canterbury Regional Noxious Plants Coordinating Committee asking for the new subsidy level to be dropped.
