Slow refunding of income tax

Persons expecting income tax refunds may have a longer wait than usual this year.

The Inland Revenue Department was taking longer to process tax returns because of staffing problems. The average wait for refunds would be eight to 10 weeks, said the acting assistant district commissioner (Mr A, J. Delore). , • Some big companies had problems with their computers and there had been delays in the issuing of IRI2 forms to, employees. The number of' incorrect forms received by the department was higher this year than usual. This was probably because some persons had been confused by ' the changes in the forms, said Mr Delore.

The Christohtirch office had so far received 100,000 IRS forms, 10,000 less than at the same time last year. Persons failing to, send

their forms to the department would receive a “gentle reminder,” ■ followed by a letter informing them of their legal obligations. If they failed to act on these reminders they could face prosecution, Mr Delore said.
