Fluoridation
Sir, —I am concerned that in suggesting chlorination be introduced with fluoridation, the City Engineer has linked a real danger to an imaginary one. Over the last three years it has become abundantly clear that most chlorinated hydrocarbons are both mutagenic and carcinogenic. In addition, it has been shown that active chlorine in drinking water chlorinates natural hydrocarbon impurities to produce these compounds which cause genetic damage to D.N.A., foetal abnormalities and may cause cancer after a latency period of 2030 years. I am happy to supply references in support of these statements. To the best of my knowledge fluoridation is safe, but chlorination is not.—Yours, etc., DR ALAN WILKINSON, Senior programmer analyst University of Canterbury. June 29, 1979.
