Salaried workers’ union
PA Rotorua A union covering salaried workers has been formed at the Tasman Pulp and Paper Company's Kawerau mill. A certificte of registration for the new union has been issued by the Labour Department. The Northern Industrial District Integrated Pulp, Paper. Timber and Forest Produce Managers, Supervisors, and Executive Officers’ Industrial Union of Workers has been started with a membership of 66. It is the minimum number required for qualification as a union. Union committees will also be Set up at the Caxton paper mill, Kawerau, and N.Z. Forest Products mills at Whakatane, Kinleith, and Penrose. A spokesman for the union said discussions had been held for the last four years on the formation of a union for salaried workers.
“Matters came to a head last year during a ,sixweek stoppage at Tasman when salaried employees faced the prospect of being suspended by the actions of other unions,” he said. “There were 300 to 400 people waiting on the outcome of a secret ballot over which they had no control,” he said. “The union will allow us a voice.”
