Lawyer jailed
PA Whakatane A Whakatane author and former lawyer, who, the Magistrate’s Court at Whakatane was told, had been living a sham for the last three years, has been sentenced to nine months jail for fraud. Douglas James Filippini had earlier pleaded guilty to the charge, which resulted from a transaction in Wellington three years ago, when as a trustee for the A.C.M.E. Whanau Trust he was handed $l3OO to invest with the N.Z.I. Finance Company. In sentencing Filippini to a term of imprisonment, Mr J. H. Murray, S.M., said the defendant
had lived a sham for three years. Filippini was ordered to pay compensation of $l3OO and put on probation for 12 months after his prison term. The Court was told it was the attendant publicity attached to the defendant’s position as president of the Ohope Surf Life-, saving Club that resulted in his being arrested after three years on the run. Defence counsel (Mr R. E. Bush) said that as well as facing the charge, his client would be struck off as a lawyer because of the conviction. Filippini had already been under suspension since 1976.
