Vietnamese refugees
Sir, — In “The Press,” of J’.’ne 18, a front-page headline read “U.N. Surplus $1400M.” Today the refugee situation vis-a-vis Malaysia and Thailand is headlined. Why does not the so-called I nited Nations provide some of these “surplus” funds, as well as “neutral” personnel, tc these overburdened nations, and also to Hong Kong and Singapore? Better transient facilities could be built without draining the h< st countries’ treasuries. Vietnam, quite obviously, is getting rid of its ethnic Chi-
nese because they are largely small “capitalists” so would not. according to them, suit their society. Andparadoxically, they doubtless assume they would act as “spies” for the Communist Chinese. It is tragic that so many hundreds of thousands must suffer for such unjust, illogical and, ultimately, absurd reasons. — Yours, etc., S. WESTERMANN. June 19, 1979. »
