Situation: An intense slow-moving anticycle is centred over the north Tasman Sea: a cold front is moving east across the south Tasman preceded by a north-west airstream; this front is expected to move on to the south of the South Island tomorrow but it is weakening. Forecasts:

Canterbury: Northwesterlies freshening inland but moderate north-easterlies about the cost; fair, but considerable high cloud; moderate temperatures.

Marlborough, Nelson: Northerlies strong about the Sounds and moderate on the Kaikoura coast, variable winds elsewhere; fair; moderate day temperatures.

Buller, Westland: Cloudy in Buller with variable winds and moderate day temperatures; northerlies in Westland, fresh at times, cloudy and cool, and occasional rain becoming more persistent during the day. Outlook: Rain in Westland, fair elsewhere.
