PA Wellington i Tlte Parliamentary Public ’Expenditure Committee has endorsed a suggestion that a j chief accountant of the Government be appointed to overIsee financial management in the public sector. The suggestion comes in a report by a specially appointed financial management review team, which recommended that the post be at ieast equivalent to an Assistant Secretary of the Treasury.

In an interim report pre sented to Parliament yester

day. the Public Expenditure Committee, chaired bv Miss Marilyn Waring (Nat.. Waipa) said it agreed with the suggestion.

The committee said there was "definite and urgent” need for improvement in the iarea of financial management.

Emphasising the need to ensure value for money spent by Government departments, the committee said there was a shortage of qualified accountants to provide proper I financial management services for both the private and public sectors.
