Woolston’s good week
Woolston yesterday completed its best week in the senior men’s hockey competition for several seasons when it drew 1-aU with Selwyn-Hillmorton in the final game of the first round of the championship. On Saturday Woolston had its first win of the season and yesterday’s draw took the team to seventh place on the championship table. It had spent most of the first round on the bottom. David Clements scored for Selwyn in the first half, and Woolston equalised late in the game when Graeme Stevenson scored. Woolston did not have the individual skills of Selwyn, but its coach, Ross Gillespie, had his players mark Selwyn closely and the tactic worked.
The two most dangerous Selwyn forwards, Mark Burtt and George Carnoutsos, dribbled too far too often, and were eventulally swallowed by the Woolston i defence.
Selwyn’s play Improved in the I second half, but ft could not 'penetrate the Woolston defence, interchanging of positions by the i Selwyn forwards also did not help their combination.
