Fluoridation
Sir, —Your correspondent, J. D. Meechin (June 13) has presented some formidable facts and statistics to show that fluoride is more than a possible prevention of caries. In today’s world there
are approximately 5000 M people, 100.4 M of whom drink fluoridated water; of these, 100 M reside in the United States. With that country’s population at 220 M it would appear that in the cradle of fluoridation it has not been adopted as enthusiastically as some people would have us believe. In this country only 60 per cent of children have received immunisation against measles, a fact which caused the Plunket Society recently to make a house-to-house canvass, in which I was involved, warning mothers of the dangerous implications that could arise if their children were not immunised against measles. If central Government does not force measles immunisation of children why do city councils force fluoridation upon everyone?—Yours, etc., JOHN J. FORSTER. June 15, 1979.
