Signed letters

Sir, —However flattering the praise of F. Asher, sen. (June 14) for correspondents for their guts in signing their names to letters to the editor, it must be pointed out that signing one’s name to letters, if one would ensure their publication, is a condition imposed by the editor. It does have the disadvantage, though, that it does expose anyone who espouses unpopular causes, and their families, to the annoyance of being rung on the telephone by anonymous cowards of both sexes who, without the brains or arguments to cross swords in the correspondence columns with those with whom they disagree, resort to personal abuse to vent their frustration. Speaking personally, I can see no particular merit in signing one’s name to a letter to the editor.—Yours, M. CREEL. June 16, 1979.
