Lyttelton welfare
Sir, — David S. Lawrence (June 14) disputed that the trade union movement is less tolerant than the selfemployed sector. Last year just under .$ll million was the total in lost wages through industrial strikes. All this occurred in a country where unemployment is causing people to live in quiet desperation, such as Lyttelton. The socialist gloom must have spread to Oamaru for I have heard of a case where a couple with two incomes are forced to have two meatless days each week. Your correspondent correctlv states that so far this year there have been fewer strikes than in the previous year but it is the annual total that tells the complete storv. From time to time Mr Rowling uses the phrase “it is time to stand up and be counted.” The most effective way to do this is to count the socialist sheep at each demonstration. — Yours, etc., L. J. STEVENS, Oamaru. June 15, 1979.
