This magnificent kauri dominates the surrounding bush. Many of the biggest and oldest kauris are important enough to have their own names, and the North Island artist Rei Hamon has drawn many of the trees-for his beautiful books about the New Zealand bush. Today very little kauri is sawn for timber, and it is used sparingly, mainly for boat-building.
