Fourteen life peers

NZPA London: The British composer, Sir Michael Tippett, is made a Companion of Honour and Mrs Diana Neave, widow of Mr Airey Neave, who was killed by a guerrilla bomb at the House of Commons car park in March, is made a Life Peer in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. The South African-educat-ed chairman of Britain’s troubled Leyland Motors, Mr Michael Edwardes, is made a Knight. The honour to Mrs Neave is a totally personal tribute by Mrs Thatcher, who praised Mrs Neave’s courage and bearing after her husband’s assassination. A disc jockey, Jimmy Young, who Mrs Thatcher has described as “my favourite interviewer,” has been given an 0.8. E. The singer, Cleo Laine, the wife of the musician, John Dankworth, also gets the 0.8. E. In the sports field, Douglas Insole becomes a C.B.E. for services to cricket, and the tennis player, Mark Cox, has been given an M.B.E. Mr Dunstan, aged 52, who was Premier in 1967 and again froftt 1970 until he resigned in February because of ill health, became a Companion of the Order of Australia for “service to politics and government.” Sir Donald, Australia’s test cricket captain from 1936 to 1948, joined a select list of people to receive both high Imperial and Australian honours when he received a similar honour for “service to cricket and cricket administration.” He is now 70. Fifteen Australians receive knighthoods — 14 as Knights Bachelor and one as a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

The former Finance Minister (Mr Charles Stinson) receives a knighthood for his service to Fiji.
