Soccer win crucial

After its morale-boosting 11-goal romp against Technical last week-end, Trans Tours United returns to the testing and important Rothmans Soccer League competition on Sunday when it meets Manurewa in Auckland.
On June 2, United inflicted on Manurewa the heaviest defeat the Auckland side has suffered since entering the league this season. It scored five times and, in the process, forced gaping holes in the Manurewa defence, holes which lost any chance of being plugged when its big centre back, Lee Stickland, was sent off 10 minutes from the end. On the last occasion United played Manurewa in Auckland, in the Adidas
Challenge Trophy match at the end of last season, Manurewa convincingly beat United, 2-0.
Manurewa’s big failing in the season has been an inability to score more than one goal a game. Only once, against. Stop Out, has it won a game with a two-goal margin. This is surprising considering it has a highlypromising pair of strikers in Bruce Foster and Mark Armstrong. With United’s international trio, Bobby Almond, Johann Verweij and Steve Sumner in fine form, United should have enough strength to win. It must continue to pick up points away from Christchurch if it is to stay a leading contender for a share of the prize money. The remainder of the draw for the week-end’s matches is Dunedin City v. Eastern
Suburbs in Dunedin, Hanimex United v. Manawatu United in Auckland, Stop Out v. Wellington Diamond United in Lower Hutt, Blockhouse Bay v. Mount Wellington in Auckland and Newmans Nelson United v. Courier Rangers in Nelson.
A full round of Midlands Coachlines League games will be played tomorrow and most interest will focus on whether Woolston W.M.C. can keep up its fine recent form when it meets Western at Garrick Park. In other games Rangers will meet North End United at Queen Elizabeth II Park No. 2, Caversham will play C a s h m e r e-Wanderers in Dunedin, Papanui W.M.C. will face Green Island at Bumside Park and Technical will play Shamrock, also on the No. 2 pitch at Queen Elizabeth II Park.
