THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS ARE INVITED from suitably qualified persons for appointment to the following positions: RESEARCH SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW/ RESEARCH FELLOW (Two Positions) (Ref. No. 44.04.003) The Department, which is wholly occupied with postgraduate training and research, seeks applicants in the fields of Australian History or modern British and Irish History, or in those aspects of ‘imperial’ history which provide comparison with Australian development. Applications will be welcomed from those who have well-ad-vanced projects which they wish to complete, as well as from others with specific short-term programmes. Appointment will normally be for two years, but this term may be varied in special circumstances. Candidates who are resident in Australia and can obtain leave from their own universities for at least a year will be considered. HUMANITIES RESEARCH CENTRE DEPUTY DIRECTOR and PROFESSOR OF MODERN EUROPEAN STUDIES The University is seeking to appoint a distinguished scholar with an established reputation in some area or areas of the humanities appropriate to modern European studies. It is looking for a person of broad intellectual sympathies, preferably with a command of two or more European languages. The Deputy Director will be required to pursue research in his or her field of interest and to assist the Director, Professor lan Donaldson, in the administration and long term planning of the Centre. As Professor of Modern European Studies, the appointee will be required to assume responsibility for, and take some part in, the teaching of under-graduate and postgraduate courses in Modern European Studies offered by the Faculty of Arts. The term of office as Deputy Director will be a matter for agreement with the University but is expected to be for seven years initially with the possibility of reappointment. Appointment as professor is until retiring age, i.e. the end of the year in which the professor reaches the age of 65 years, with the option of retiring at any time after age 60.
