Overseas students
Sir, — Among the rubbish placed in my letter box this morning is a circular pleading for citizens to support a group in favour of free university education for Malaysian students. From previous press reports it would seem that most of these students come from the more affluent circles of Malaysia and that parents could well pay the fees suggested. In any case, \vhy should New Zealand taxpayers' be asked to subsidise education for Malaysian students or other nationals. What an outcry there was when the Government asked universities to restrain their expenditure by 3 per cent. University students are a privileged class in New Zealand today and should apply their energies to learning, the purpose of their university education, and leave their protests until they have grown up and understand the meaning of economics and living within the national income. — Yours, T. E. TURNER. June 13, 1979.
