Port road widening proceeding
Big changes in the size and type of commercial traffic using Lyttelton is putting new demands on the Evans Pass route between the port and Sumner.
The Town Cleric of Lyttelton (Mr D. A. Hillier) said the road needed to be improved. The Borough Council was seeking more money from the National Roads Board for this.
The widening of a bluff on the road by blasting away
huge quantities of rock has been completed and a contract is expected to be let soon for the sealing of a new surface.
Mr Hillier said that wide parts of the new road might be used for lookouts over the port’s entrance. The closing of the Christ-church-Lyttelton road tunnel during a dispute last March had prompted the move to improve the road so that it could cope with heavy commercial vehicles.
