Rose pruning

Pruning time is with us once again and already the first public demonstrations have been announced. The Canterbury Rose Society advises that it will be holding its annual Rose Pruning Demonstrations tomorrow as follows: Bishopdale Shopping Centre, 10 a.m.; Botanical Garden, 1.30 p.m.; and Scott Memorial Gardens, Kaiapoi, 1.30 p.m. If the weather is unsuitable, notice will be given from Radio 3ZB. These demonstrations

are being held a little earlier than usual this year, a factor which should help to allay the fears of those who are firm in their belief that August is the correct and only time for winter pruning of roses. Where very cold conditions and heavy late frosts are likely to prevail, then this is certainly a sound rule to observe, under more general situations and less severe climates, pruning can safely be carried out much earlier.
