St Albans shop plan
Redevelopment of a St Albans shopping centre, taking in one residential section, was recommended yesterday ' by a Christchurch City Council planner.
Mr M. J. Brooks told a hearing panel that the project, at the south-east corner of the Warrington Street and Barbadoes Street junction, should be encouraged. A new post office would be included in the work.
A spokesman for Westdale Development said there would be eight or nine shops in addition to the post office. The old shops in Barbadoes Street would be demolished to make room for the centre and about 30 car-parking spaces. Original plans called for a service lane behind the shops but council officers said that
that could lead to traffic dangers in Warrington Street. They said that the layout should be changed to allow customers and service vehicles to use the same area in front of the shops. This would also make room for more landscaping. The developers had agreed to the change. One old house would be demolished but an existing gum tree would be retained. A decision on the proposal was reserved.
