NOT ALONE

One of Christchurch’s keener radio listeners had a puzzling and disappointing time one Wednesday evening near the end of last month. He had observed that 3YC was to have a programme of New Zealand music and soon after 7 p.m. he tuned in, all eagerness. He confessed to us that he has no profound knowledge of the new electronic music, but he was puzzled by the sounds he heard from 3YC. The piece was evidently titled "Kryptophones” but according to our informant, it appeared to consist almost entirely of taped onversations, piled one on top of the other, like some eavesdropper’s nightmare. He could not stand it, or understand

it, so he telephoned the N.Z.B.C. and asked for 3YC. He was told politely that he could not have 3YC, as the programme was broadcast from Wellington. He wanted to explain his problem to the girl at the other end of the line, and to introduce the subject on a light-hearted note, he said he was worried about his radio, because it seemed to be getting at least three stations all at once.

The item was still being broadcast and the girl left the te'ephone briefly to listen. She came back.

“There’s something wrong with ours, too” she said. “I’ll have to get a technician.”
