Buller beaten, 37-7
PA Gisborne Thanks mainly to the fine work of its forwards, Poverty Bay beat Buller, 37-7, at Gisborne yesterday after leading 18-3 at half time. The Bay forwards gave an impressive display of close supporting play which gave Buller plenty of trouble. The home backs had a good first 15 minutes but lacked penetration from then onwards. Stars of the game were the Bay flanker, Simon
Spence, and the half-back and captain Philip Duncan. Buller had its best value from the full-back, Rex Mumm, and the halfback, John Gilbert. Scorers for Poverty Bay: tries by Wilson Isaac (2), Ken McPherson, Paul Cocker and Les Barbara, with Isaac kicking four penalty goals and a conversion, and John Whittle a dropped goal. For Buller John Gilbert scored a try and Rex Mumm kicked a penalty.
