Royal Blaze found dead
Special correspondent Palmerston North The veteran jumper, Royal Blaze, died in the float on the way home from the Manawatu races last Saturday. It was a tragic day for his Woodville trainer, lan Bradbury. He took two horses to the races, Royal Blaze and The Assassin. Both seemed top chances rising to the last fenee of the Melford Steeples. Royal Blaze was half a
length ahead of Dharwar, with The Assassin close up third, and the rest well back. But all three tumbled at this fence.
Royal Blaze was not well after the race and was discovered dead when the float was opened at Woodville. An 11-year-old by Nickola from Banon, Royal Blaze was a winner over country at Woodville last month. That was his first win for about seven years but he had been only lightly raced.
Michael Sloan, the rider of Royal Blaze on Saturday, has been released from hospital but will go back later this week for X-rays of his broken nose. He had his first ride over fences on Royal Blaze at Woodville last month. Although that was a successful debut, he has had more than his share of bad luck having also had a bad fall at the Masterton meeting.
