Prendergast seeks wife’s help for cup
NZPA Brisbane The Wingatui trainer, Tony Prendergast, has called in a New Zealand reinforcement to help prepare the heavily backed Mr Ay Bee for next Monday’s $75,000 Brisbane Cup (3200 m) at Eagle Farm. Prendergast’s wife, Lyn, a licensed New Zealand jockey, is expected to arrive in Brisbane tomorrow to assist in Mr Ay Bee’s cup preparations.
Mr Ay Bee, which was third in Saturday’s O’Shea Stakes at Eagle Farm, is the 4-1 second favourite in latest cup betting.
Prendergast also hopes to race Mr Ay Bee in the $BO,OOO Doomben Cup (2200 m) on July 14. The race-jockey Michael Mein so far has handled Mr Ay Bee in all his Australian trackwork.
But Lyn Prendergast rode Mr Ay Bee to a runaway fresh-up win over 1200 m at Beaumont on April 7. She will supervise the Doomben Cup training of Mr Ay Bee when Prendergast returns to New Zealand to resume training members of his 15-horse team.
