Lyttelton rates to rise 25 per cent?

A possible rate increase of up to 25 per cent has been tipped freely around the borough of Lyttelton. The Lyttelton Borough Council’s finance committee will meet this week to discuss the rates, which will be ratified later in the month by a special meeting to adopt the estimates. The Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr M. E. Foster) said yesterday that a rate increase seemed almost inevitable because ot inflation. “I hope that it won’t go to the extent other local bodies have had to, but it seems it will be in double figures,” he said. & sjs sis The new generation of roll-on shipping seems almost certain to be of the design type already represented on the New Zealand coast by the Scan Carriers ships calling at Timaru. The Tourcoing recently called at the South Canterbury port; she joins the Boggabilla as ships specially designed for the New ZealandEurope trade. Another ship of similar design has been introduced by the Pacific Australia Direct Line to the AustraliaWest Coast United States trade. The 32,500 (deadweight) tonne vessel is the biggest ship of the new roll-on design because of a slight difference in deadweight calculation. She has been named Lillooet, after native Indian people who speak the Lillooet language and live in south-west British Columbia in Canada. The Shipping Corporation of India has introduced a

new ship, the Vishva Nandini, to the Pacific run, and Columbus Lines will introduce a juntbo container ship, the Columbus Queensland, later this year. Columbus Lines plans to withdraw the smaller charter ships, Columbus Coromandel, Columbus Carabic, Columbus Capricorn, Columbus Canada, and Columbus California early next year. The Columbus Canterbury has already been named as a replacement to complete a trio with the Columbus Louisiana, which was brought on stream earlier this week, and the Columbus Queensland.
