Sale of painting

Sir, — Can the president of the Canterbury Society of Arts give a reason for giving away a G. P. Nerli painting. In “The Press,” (May 26), was a news item reporting the sale of two New Zealand paintings by Goldie and Nerli. The Nerli painting came from the permanent collection of the C.S.A., and belongs to the people of Christi church. — Yours, etc., A. L. McLEAN.

May 28, 1979. [Mr D. J. Hargreaves, president of the Canterbury Society of Arts, replies: “The Canterbury Society of Arts feels it has more than fulfilled its obligations to the people of Christchurch by gifting a major part of its permanent collection of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery. Any works that were considered to be of artistic or historic interest and importance have been given in this way to the people of Christchurch. The works that were left in the permanent collection were generally considered to be of lesser merit or poor examples of their kind. The Nerli painting fell into this latter category and was sold by the society in 1974 at a fair market price. The C.S.A. was not a party to the latest sale reported in ‘The Press’.”]
