Looking at the ‘Mafia' in Ilaly
This evening the "World In Action” team on TVI is looking at the Mafia. For 10 years two rival Mafia clans had been waging war for the control of development funds which were pouring into Italy’s poorest region from the Common Market and the Italian Government. The most powerful clan, led by Don Mommo, aged 61, was being challenged by Paolo De Stefano; and when De Stefano was murdered the police inquiry led to many arrests. This in turn led to the most sensational Mafia trial for years. Sixty clan chiefs stood in the dock and “World In Action” was there to film the proceedings. The TV crew was also able to speak to Don Mommo and to victims of his rule, including a mayor who testified against him despite threats to his own life. More than 800 people were killed during the struggle for power.
