Selecting the National Youth Band
The National Youth land is formed annually -om selected outstanding oung brass players who leet together in the May :hool holidays. The venue this year was lamilton: the selection allowed the national band tismpionships there. Players are nominated rent around the country nd auditioned for places. Jiris have equal opportuny to be selected.
The thorough teaching and playing experience the young players get equips them well to return to their own bands. Tonight’s National radio programme has the first in a series of features recorded in May. The conductor is Kevin Jarratt, a well known figure in brass band circles; and. when principal cornet for the National Band, reputed to be one of the finest cornet players the band had ever had. The National Youth Band, which this year, has the added incentive of a forthcoming tour of Australia, can be heard for the next three Wednesdays from the National programme.
