Strike action vote by drivers

Canterbury truck-drivers will meet this morning to vote on a national 48-hour Strike.

The vote arises from the recent breakdown in award talks, according to the secretary of the Canterbury Drivers’ Union (Mr P. R. Liggett). Mr Liggett said the offer by employers would be explained to members, who would then be asked to endorse a national stoppage.

Timing of the strike would be up to the Drivers' Federation, he said. It would not be for at least a week, however, until all drivers’ unions had voted. The federation had initially sought a 20 per cent wage increase. This had been rejected by the employers. The federation was seeking parity for route lorry drivers with rail. This would amount to a 21 per cent increase. Today’s meeting will also vote on another stoppage recommendation which will be put forward by the local executive. Mr Liggett said he could not reveal the nature of the recommendation.
