Gifts of sympathy to Jews
PA Wellington The desecration of Jewish graves at the Karori Cemetery and the burning of a chapel have touched the heart of an Auckland woman. in a letter to the “Dominion” newspaper, Mrs Madge Budd enclosed a cheque asking that it be sent to the Jewish community to help repair the damage. Late last month. 31 Jewish graves at Karori were sprayed with swastikas and anti-semitic slogans. and a small chapel burnt.
The president of the Wellington Hebrew Congregation, Mr Gerald Shapiro, said the congregation had received donations and messages of sympathy from throughout New Zealand since the incident. “It shows the feelings of average New Zealanders towards that sort of situation and their abhorrence of it,” he said. The congregation wished to thank everyone who had shown symnathy or given help. It had sent S3OO to the Wellington City Council to help pay the cost of cleaning the graves.
