‘Ease gag law’ call

PA Wellington The Consumer Council wants the defamation laws changed to eliminate costly “gagging” writs. In its anual report, tabled in Parliament yesterdav. the council says that it paid out $22,000 in legal expenses last year for actions brought by three

companies which were now out of business or could not meet commitments to customers. “We consider these to be gagging writs of little or no substance,” it says. “We feel it is time the' defamation laws were amended to allow free, informed comment.”
