M.P. attacks gang violence

The Government must take immediate action to curb gang violence in New Zealand, and more police resources must be made available to deal with the position, in the view of the Opposition spokesman on police and member of Parliament for Wigram (Mr M. A. Connelly). An urgent appraisal of a longer-term approach was needed and action to deal effectively with gang violence, the gang cult, and the social and economic conditions promoting this would have to be undertaken, he said. “Either the rule of law prevails or rule by thugs, the violent, the irresponsible, and the criminals takes over,” Mr Connelly said. A situation prevailed today where organised groups were openly challenging and defying the law, and those who had the responsibility for administering it. "Insecurity and fear prevail in the community, especially amongst the aged, women, and parents,” he said. “In some areas, people fear to use the streets and hide in

fear in the security of their own homes. An emergency exists,” Mr Connelly said. An appraisal of the law and its effectiveness as a deterrent, especially to those who openly flout it, was urgently needed. Punishment, incorporating work and discipline, would have to be considered. Those who wantonly injured people and damaged and destroyed property should foot the bill, he said. Mr Connelly criticised television programmes which publicised gang activity and which featured, as normal standards of conduct, violence and similar ant i-social behaviour. “The police, who are in the front line and bearing the brunt, must be reinforced without further dealy,” he said. “Although they are being subjected to increasing strain and stress, their reasonable requests for an adjustment to their pay and conditions, continue to be ignored by the Government. This needs immediate attention,” Mr Connellv said.
