Cigarette duty slated
PA Wellington The Tobacco Manufacturers’ Association alleged yesterday that smokers, in ' “paying more than S2M a week in indirect taxes,” were already paying more than their fair share of Government revenue. The present excise duty, which on a packet of 20 standard cigarettes was
31.1 c, made tobacco one of the most heavily taxed consumer products in New Zealand, said the association’s executive director (Mr D. G. Waddell). Mr Waddell expressed concern about calls for increases in the tax on tobacco products as the Government moved towards great indirect taxation.
