The record response to this year's appeal for the intellectually handicapped was a fantastic endorsement of the society’s work, said the national director (Mr J. B. Munro). After a drop in 1978, Canterbury’s contribution rose by a record 51 per cent to $71,577, he said. The over-all total rose by 21.7 per cent to $813,619. “We are grateful to everybody who made this such a record total,” said Mr Munro. “It is even better than the present inflation rate.” He said the sum would cover only 10 per cent of the society’s budgeted running costs for 1979, and while the Government provides nearly half of the running costs, the society must constantly encourage support.
