Taxation policy

Sir, — D. G. O’Rourke’s criticism of the Government’s latest taxes (May 25) shows superficial thinking on the cause for these increased taxes. We all hate heavy taxes but reasonable, responsible people realise that New Zealand has been living, far beyond its means. He fails to admit that our two mammoth top-heavy tax-gobblers, the welfare state and superfluous university education are keeping us all taxed to the eyeballs. Their huge tax drag is inhibiting private expansion and development, drawing vital would-be skilled young tradesmen into dead-end benefit situations and forcing them as over-supplied graduates to emigrate. Despite cries of anguish from sociologists and university heads concerning recent cuts, D. G. O’Rourke fails to admit these courageous efforts to stem even higher taxes so damaging to our cost of living and quality of life. D. G. O’Rourke will not admit that National Superannuation is for most a tax repayment for a dignified retirement. — Yours, etc., S. B. ROBERTS. May 26, 1979.
