Fish farming
Sir, — Mr Barrer’s quibbling over the prices of fanned trout is pointless; he could have found ample evidence. Two separate university studies point to farmed trout being a luxury item, unavailable to all but a few privileged. One Victoria University study, a year ago, said that trout would wholesale at $5 a kg, thereby making it at $8 a kg retail. The study quoted Mr Barker’s salmon farm at Takaka as wholesaling salmon at $6 a kg, or over $9 retail. As yet another university study said, “it would be a meal enjoyed only by the few rich.” Australian individuals seem quick to reassure New Zealanders about trout farming but the facts are otherwise. The Monaro Acclimatisation Society’s annual meeting expressed concern about poaching and refused to pass a motion of confidence in the State Fisheries' efforts for anglers. — Yours, etc., E. R. BASON, Secretary. New Zealand Alliance of Freshwater Anglers. May 13, 1979.
