Two die in crash
PA Invercargill Two young women were killed and two others seriously injured when their small car and an oil tanker collided near Invercargill yesterday morning. The four women were travelling from Bluff to Invercargill when the car and the tanker collided at 7.40 a.m., about 15km from Invercargill. Those killed were Christine Neilson, the driver. aged 18; and Maureen Jean Coote, aged 17, a passenger, both of Bluff.
The two occupants of the car taken to Kew Hospital were Barbara Jean Metzger, aged 17, and Daphne Hazel Dunn, aged 36, both also of Bluff. Miss Metzger is in a serious condition with head injuries. Mrs Dunn is in the intensive-care unit with head, chest, and upperlimb injuries. The driver of the tanker, Errol Thomas Lewis, aged 38, of Invercargill, is also in hospital with head injuries. His condition is not serious.
