Theft of $ll00 cheque alleged
Bail was . “strongly” opposed. when a sickness beneficiary, aged 47, appeared before Mr B. A. Palmer, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday on three charges of false pretences and one of theft. lan Maxwell Sidon is charged with stealing an Inland Revenue Department cheque, worth $llOO, and of attempting to obtain goods with it. The alleged offending occurred on May 21 and 23 in Christchurch. The defendant, who told the Magistrate that he did not seek bail, was remanded in custody to June 1 without plea. RECEIVING CHARGE Wade Phillip Smith, aged 23, was remanded without plea to June 1 on a charge of receiving. He is alleged to 'have received 70 batteries, 28 battery chargers and 20 jumper leads, worth a total of $3lOO, from Michael Sjoberg. The alleged offence took place on May 24. Also remanded to June 1 without plea was Michael Sjoberg, aged 22, a track worker, charged with receiving 14 batteries, five battery Chargers, and two jumper leads worth a total of $592. • This offence is also alleged to have taken place on May 24. DRUG CHARGE An unemployed man charged with using heroin on May 9 was remanded to July 26 for a defended hearing". Bryan Lawrence Brown, aggd 26, was allowed bail of $3OO with a surety of the same amount.
THEFT CHARGE A freezing worker charged I with stealing a motor-cycle. engine, valued at $3OO, de-1 nied the alleged offence. Bruce James Turner, aged: 30, is alleged to have stolen, the engine, the property ofj Michael St Merat, between! December 11, 1978, and April 3, 1979. The defendant was also charged with receiving the motor-cycle engine. He was allowed bail of $4OO and remanded to July 20 for a defended hearing. CUSTODY REMAND Thomas William Gray, aged 41, unemployed, was remanded in custody, to June 19 for the taking of depositions on a charge of possessing cannabis. Bail was opposed by Ser- i geant M. P. John James Lilly, aged 33, j admitted five charges of stealing liquor worth a totall of $83.91. the property of Bishop and Company, Ltd. 3'he offences occurred be-1 tween January 1 and May I 17. Sergeant Caldwell said the. police had carried out a search al the address of the defendant where a quantity of liquor, valued at $67, was found. The defendant, when spoken to later at work, had admitted having stolen the liquor from his employer, saying it was for his own consumption.
