University favoured in hockey
The inter-district hockey league involving teams from Timaru, the West Coast and Christchurch, reaches its conclusion today. A revolutionary competition, it has not been without its problems — mainly because it was played in two pools of five and seven — but in spite of this teams are looking towards an improved competition next year. University and High School Old Boys, the two teams most likely to dispute the Canterbury Hockey Association’s senior championship, which continues after this week-end, meet in the inter-district final at Porritt Park this afternoon. Because of its greater experience University seems the likely winner, but already this season the two teams have played a 0-all draw and University has lost a game. '
In the past few weeks University has not played up to its capabilities although against Linwood last Saturday it hinted that a return to its best form is not far away.
